Production of Coumarins by Phytophthora infestans

Abstract

THE causal organism of potato blight, Phytophthora infestans (Mont) de Bary, has been subjected to very close investigation since it was first described just over a century ago. It is only in recent years, however, that it has been possible to culture this organism in vitro on a chemically defined medium, and very little work has been done on its secondary metabolism. Such investigations are of interest because they may provide some insight into the basis of the host–parasite relationship.
