Regulation of Leucocyte Alkaline Phosphatase and the Philadelphia Chromosome

Abstract

IN recent years there has been a number of reports concerning the relationship in the human cell between Chromosome 21 and leucocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP)1–3. It has been suggested that, since the LAP was elevated in trisomy 21 and lowered in chronic granulocytic leukaemia (CGL) in which the Philadelphia (Ph1) chromosome was present, the structural gene for LAP was located on the distal one-third of chromosome 21. The changes of LAP in these diseases were in the proper direction and a gene-dose effect seemed plausible.
