Effect of Glucagon on the Alkaline Phosphatase Activity in the Pancreatic Islets of Rats

Abstract

ALKALINE phosphatases have been demonstrated by histochemical staining methods in the pancreatic islet cells of different species1–4. In the islets of adult mammals a positive reaction for this enzyme has so far been found only in the α cells1,2, while in birds the reaction is present mainly in the β cells3,4. Since at least in mammals the islet α cells represent the site of glucagon production5, it is noteworthy that Verne and Petkov6 reported a diminished staining intensity for alkaline phosphatases in these cells after administration of glucagon to rats. In the present investigation the effect of glucagon on the alkaline phosphatase activity of the islet tissue has been re-evaluated by the application of quantitative chemical micro-methods to isolated pancreatic islets of rats.
