Enhanced Growth of Bordetella pertussis in Dialysis Culture

Abstract

THE propagation of phase-1 Bordetella pertussis for vaccine production has been the subject of considerable experimentation. Some investigations1–4 dealt with a description of media which do not contain blood, yet few studies were directed to population development or to methods for achieving high-titred cultures. Pollock5 observed that the growth of the Pertussis organism in liquid media was enhanced by the presence of a diphtheroid; and Holt6 reported the recovery of high concentrations of B. pertussis from a solid-liquid biphasic system.
