Glucose Metabolism of Central Nervous Tissues in Rats with Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis

Abstract

THE incorporation of carbon from glucose-14C and acetate-1-14C into lipids of the central nervous system has been shown to be greater than normal in rats with experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE)1,2. In order to explore further the metabolism of tissues from animals with this demyelinative condition, glucose uptake, carbon dioxide production and lactate accumulation in vitro were measured in brain stem and spinal cord slices from rats in the acute paralytic stage of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis. As controls, similar slices were investigated from both normal animals and those injected only with Freund's adjuvant.
