Abstract
ACCORDING to present relativistic ideas, a test particle released from rest at a distance rmax from a central point mass m appears (from the point of view of an external observer) to slow down as it falls toward the Schwarzschild radius 2m, reaching it only asymptotically. This is in contrast with the Newtonian picture of a rectilinear oscillation with half-period π(r3max/2m)1/2.
