Antiviral Activity of p-Nitrobenzylphosphonic Acid

Abstract

pNITROBENZYLPHOSPHONIC ACID (I), first prepared by Litthauer1 in 1889, has attracted little attention from biologists or biochemists. In a recent investigation2 this compound was found to inhibit the activity of intestinal alkaline phosphatase. In continuation of our programme of work on phosphonic acids in various biological systems2–4 we have investigated the effect of p-nitrobenzylphosphonic acid (p-NBP) on the propagation of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMC) in vitro and in vivo and found it to possess antiviral activity.
