Loss of Methyl Tritium from [3H] Acetate in Rumen Fluid

Abstract

THE availability of both [14C]- and [3H]-labelled compounds, together with the development and refinement of scintillation counting procedures, has encouraged the use of radioisotopes in the investigation of metabolic processes. It has generally been assumed that with carbon-14 little or no isotope effect is produced and that the labelled substrate behaves in a similar way to the non-labelled compound. With tritium, however, considerable isotope effect may occur because of the large differences in atomic weights of tritium and hydrogen1.
