Abstract
DURING an investigation of the factors influencing choice of substrates by the marine amphipod Corophium volutator (Pallas), I observed that distilled water induced many bacteria to detach from the surfaces of particles of marine sand1. A search of the literature revealed that this phenomenon had not been reported, and that there was little information on why aquatic bacteria attach to surfaces2,3.
