Seven Co-ordinate Vanadium Complexes with Metal-to-metal Bonds

Abstract

IN contrast with the dimeric carbonyls of transition metals with odd atomic number, hexacarbonylvanadium, with the electron configuration d5, is mononuclear and paramagnetic with one unpaired electron. It is of interest to enquire, therefore, whether: (1) by partial substitution of the carbonyl groups, dimeric compounds containing vanadium–vanadium bonds can be stabilized; (2) complexes containing M-V(CO)6 groups (M = Cu, Ag, Au), analogous with other complexes recently described1, can be prepared. The corresponding halides are unknown.
