Fatty Acid Composition of Lipids extracted from Three Spherical Bacteria

ABEL1 suggested that taxonomic importance be attached to fatty acid components of bacterial lipid and proposed a simple and rapid scheme for the isolation and characterization of the lipid. Previous workers have shown slight similarities or differences in fatty acid contents of Lactobacilli2, group ‘NStreptococci3, mesophilic and psychrophilic yeasts4 and Sarcina species5. In several micro-organisms Bloch6 showed that vaccinic acid is the principal acid in anaerobes whereas oleic acid predominates in aerobes. We have compared the fatty acid spectra of three spherical bacteria which are strikingly different in cellular arrangement, Gram staining, and habitat.
