Incorporation of 14C-Glucose and 14C-Glucose 6-phosphate into Glycogen and CO2 by Rat Liver Slices

Abstract

IT has been postulated that the hexokinase reaction is not a necessary step in glycogen synthesis. This is supported by experiments in liver slices1,2 and in the diaphragm3, as well as in cell-free systems4,5. The hexokinase reaction was assumed to occur only in the degradation pathway of glucose, and a different pathway was postulated for glycogen synthesis, circumventing the hexokinase reaction4,5.
