Abstract
THE lipids of the skin are affected markedly by the dietary condition of the animal1,2. In rats kept on a fat-free diet the skin retained more fat than any of the other organs including, for example, the liver and muscle3,4. The epidermis of fatty-acid deficient rats is thicker and more differentiated than that of normal rats, the stratum granulosum is distinct and the stratum corneum is thick5. In this communication the lipid content of the skin of mice which were deficient in essential fatty acids is compared with that of normal mice.
