Abstract
GREATLY increased use of fertilizer nitrogen has stimulated interest in the development of more precise methods of measuring the nitrogen supplying-power of soils and estimating fertilizer nitrogen requirements. At present, four approaches are used for this purpose: (1) microbiological methods1 in which nitrogen mineralized during a prescribed period of incubation, usually of 1–2 weeks' duration, is measured; (2) total nitrogen; (3) mineral nitrogen content of fresh2 samples; and (4) nitrogen mineralized as a result of chemical treatment involving acid3,4 or alkaline hydrolysis5.
