Endotoxin-induced Neutrophil Response in Miniature Pigs ingesting Strontium-90 Daily

Abstract

A CONTINUING investigation to evaluate the biological effects of daily strontium-90 ingestion in miniature pigs, a species similar in weight and some physiological features to man, has been in progress in our laboratory since 1958 (refs. 1 and 2). One of the few clinical changes observed after 3 years of daily ingestion of 125 µc. strontium-90/day is a moderate neutropenia3. So far, under our experimental conditions, this has not interfered with the health of the animals. However, under certain adverse conditions the ability of the animals to maintain their health may be influenced by their ability to increase neutrophil numbers. This report summarizes preliminary observations on the use of the endotoxin-induced neutrophil response as a measure of the neutrophil reserve of control animals and animals ingesting strontium-90 daily. In normal animals a transient neutrophilia is one of the prominent effects produced by injection of bacterial endotoxin4.
