Isolation of Nicotine from Cell Cultures of Nicotian tabacum

Abstract

DESPITE the considerable variety of plant tissues already cultured in vitrothere are few instances of the identification of specific secondary metabolites in such cultures. Although Nicotiana1 and Atropa2 alkaloids have been found in the root organ cultures used in biosynthetic investigations, estimates2,3 of the concentration of these alkaloids in callus tissue were made without rigorous identification.
