Immunization with a Synthetic Cholesterolester Antigen and Induced Atherosclerosis in Rabbits

Abstract

THE possibility of modifying the atherosclerotic process by immunological means has been suggested recently1–3. Gero et al.1,2 immunized rabbits with β-lipoproteins isolated from serum of cockerels maintained on high cholesterol diets. It was reported that immunized animals developed less atherosclerotic plaques in the aorta when fed a cholesterol-containing diet than did control animals. In experiments which we have performed and also in work reported by others4,5, the results obtained by Gero et al. could not be confirmed.
