Whisker-like Growth of Polyoxymethylene from Solution

HIGH-MOLECULAR-WEIGHT polyoxymethylene is known to crystallize very readily. Various forms of single crystals of this polymer have been described: crystals about 1 mm in size can be grown directly from monomeric formaldehyde1–3, fibres are formed by polymerization of crystalline trioxane4–6, while hexagonal lamellæ and thin star-shaped crystals have been grown from solution of the polymer7,8.
