Selective Inhibition of Nucleic Acid Synthesis in Mycobacterium tuberculosis by Isoniazid

Abstract

THE physiological basis of the bactericidal action of isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide) on Mycobacterium tuberculosis is unknown, although several hypotheses have been proposed1–4. The work recorded here on the effect of isoniazid on macromolecule synthesis in this organism was prompted by the finding that isoniazid is bactericidal only for actively growing cells5.
