Accumulation of Calcium and Strontium by Brown Trout from Waters in the United Kingdom

Abstract

PUBLISHED data on the accumulation factors for strontium-90 by freshwater organisms have been criticized on the grounds that the factor has no real meaning unless it is related to the calcium concentration in the medium, and experimental data for plant material using 89,85Sr as a tracer have been presented to support this1. Some additional data are now available on the accumulation of stable calcium and strontium in bone and muscle of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., taken from various waters in the United Kingdom. These data support this view and indicate the range of accumulation factors that occur.
