Effect of Carbon Tetrachloride Intoxication on the Activity of Enzymes of the Urea Cycle in the Liver of the Rat

Abstract

THERE are many indications that amino-acid metabolism is altered following administration of carbon tetrachloride1–3. Smuckler et al.1 have shown that there is an impairment of incorporation of amino-acid into protein as early as 1 h after administration of carbon tetrachloride, probably associated with changes in the structure of the endoplasmic reticulum. The level of activity of ornithine transcarbamylase in the blood also rises rapidly following this type of liver damage4 while at longer time-intervals there is a decrease in the activity of glutamic dehydrogenase2 and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase5.
