Abstract
IT has been demonstrated that it is possible to preserve erythrocytes in viable condition for long periods of time by storing them at a temperature which is low enough practically to arrest the metabolic activity of the cells1. The temperature required for prolonged preservation is below −70° C, and glycerol has generally been used to prevent the lysis due to freezing and thawing2. Such mixtures of erythrocytes and glycerol are strongly hypertonic and cannot be used directly for transfusion because the sudden decrease in osmotic pressure would cause lysis of the cells.
