N(6)-benzyladenine as a Senescence Inhibitor for Selected Horticultural Crops

Abstract

A STUDY was undertaken on the post-harvest application of N(6)-benzyladenine (manufactured and patented as ‘SD 4901’ by the Shell Development Co., Modesto, California) to certain fruits and vegetables in an attempt to delay the onset of senescence. This is a continuation of investigations into the extension of the storage life of fruits, vegetables, and other products with ionizing radiations1–3, modified atmospheres4, antibiotics and antifungal chemicals5–7, and growth regulators8.
