Myoglobin in the Human Fœtus

Abstract

EVIDENCE for the presence of a fœtal form of myoglobin in human beings, analogous to fœtal hæmoglobin, has consisted of reported electrophoretic and spectral differences between material obtained from skeletal muscles of infants and that obtained from adults. Electrophoretically, so-called fœtal myoglobin appeared to behave somewhat like fœtal hæmoglobin; however, its absorption spectrum in the visible range showed, unlike either fœtal hæmoglobin or myoglobin from the adult, a “characteristic plateau between the wave-lengths 490–530 mµ at pH 8.6” (ref. 1).
