Abstract

IN a recent communication1, Lainé has suggested the use of my latest form of ‘cold cathode’ arc harmonic generator as a mixer for obtaining beats at high microwave frequencies (that is, frequencies corresponding to submillimetre waves) between the outputs from two optical masers. I would like to comment on this proposal and suggest a simpler alternative device.
