Production of Slime Substance in Mixed Cultures of Rhodopseudomonas capsulatus and Azotobacter vinelandii

Abstract

WE have reported1 that a symbiotic relationship exists between Rhodopseudomonas capsulatus (photosynthetic bacteria) and Azotobacter vinelandii. When they were mixed, the combination fixed three times more molecular nitrogen than did either pure culture. If the pH of the medium were controlled, the nitrogen fixation in the mixed culture was stimulated twelvefold2.
