Molybdenum and Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation by Alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.)

THE specific effect of molybdenum on the nitrogen fixation by Azotobacter spp.1,2, Clostridium pasteurianum3,4, some blue-green algae (Nostoc and Anabaena)5,6 and the symbiotic nitrogen fixation by legumes7–9 is well established. So far, it is unknown whether molybdenum is also essential for the symbiotic nitrogen fixation of a non-legume such as alder (Alnus glutinosa). The aim of the present investigation was to seek such an effect.
