Puzzolanic Activity and Semiconductivity of Fired Kaolin and Kaolinitic Clay

Abstract

IT is known that the reaction of a puzzolan with lime in the presence of water is a chemisorption process1, and that the puzzolanic activity of a material is enhanced when its crystal structure breaks down, that is, when the material is in a highly disordered state. The enhancement of puzzolanic activity is attributed to the increased reactivity of the materials in the disordered state2 or its lattice being in strained condition. Similarly, the observed high puzzolanic activity of volcanic ash, a natural puzzolan in the glassy phase, is considered to be the result of the highly strained condition of its lattice3.
