Abstract

ALTHOUGH basidiospores of various xylophilous, coprophilous and lignicolous Hymenomycetes germinate quite readily, and in high percentage, those from mushrooms with proved mycorrhizal associations rarely, if ever, respond to standard mycological techniques. Among the latter are species of Amanita, Lactarius, Cortinarius, Russula, Hygrophorus, and Boletus. After completing an extensive series of experiments on the above problem, Kneebone1 concluded that the low respiratory-rate of the spores is probably not limited by a lack of metabolic reserves but rather by some deficiency of the organism which prevents efficient utilization of available respiratory substrates.
