Abstract
THE activation analysis of 5 parts in 1012 of indium in zinc has been carried out, using a method of separation investigated by Kosta and Hoste1. 1-gm. samples of zinc were irradiated in a neutron flux of 8 × 1011 n./cm.2 sec. in the BR.I reactor. After irradiation, the samples were dissolved in 10 ml. of 6 N hydrobromic acid with the addition of 3–4 drops of nitric acid (sp. grav. 1.40) in order to accelerate the dissolution. By addition of 5 ml. of 6 N hydrobromic acid to the solution, its concentration was increased to about 4 N. After two extractions with 5 ml. of isopropylether, the organic layer contained all the trivalent indium. Small amounts of zinc-65, which were present in the organic layer, were washed out with 10 ml. of 6 N hydrobromic acid.
