Production of B Character on Human Erythrocytes by Hæmosensitization with Purified Eschierichia coli O 86 Substance

Abstract

THE serological specificity of the human blood group substances A and B is due to characteristic polysaccharide components1. Recently, the same has been found to apply to the Salmonella O antigen2. The serologically active component, a lipopolysaccharide, was isolated from the bacteria and submitted to chemical analysis, which showed that in various strains within the same O group or O sub-group, the O antigen is of an identical qualitative-chemical composition, that is, it contains the same ‘Zucker-bausteine’.
