Hydrogen-bonding in Calcium-deficient Hydroxyapatites

Abstract

MANY calcium phosphates precipitated from solution give the X-ray diffraction pattern of hydroxyapatite but depart from the ideal stoichiometry, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, of this compound. Pure hydroxyapatite can be prepared only under hydrothermal bomb conditions1,2, whereas the appearance of hydroxyapatites with low Ca/P ratio from aqueous preparations seems to be the rule rather than the exception.
