Autonomic Nerve–Smooth Muscle Transmission

Abstract

DESPITE extensive work on the morphology and pharmacology of autonomic effector systems, very little is known about the mechanism of transmission of excitation from nerve to smooth muscle. In the present work our approach has been to apply modern electrophysiological methods to a suitable autonomic nerve–smooth muscle preparation in a manner similar to that described for the skeletal neuro-muscular junction1.
