Abstract
RESULTS presented in this communication indicate that both β-hydroxy β-methylglutarate and mevalonate may be considered precursors of carotene formation in an in vitro extract obtained from mycelial mats of the mould Phycomyces blakesleeanus. This extract, capable of synthesizing carotene, can also be used for establishing the existence of a back reaction from the mevalonate to β-hydroxy β-methylglutarate, for brevity referred to as glutarate.
