Abstract
MOULTING in amphibians starts when a new stratum corneum of the epidermis is formed. When moulting is normal the old stratum corneum is loosened and the slough thus formed is finally shed. (In the literature on amphibians, ‘moulting’ is often used synonymously with ‘sloughing’, that is, to denote merely the shedding of the slough.)
