Abstract
COAGULASE-POSITIVE staphylococci multiply easily in normal human sera1 and are not susceptible to the properdin system2. In contrast, coagulase-negative strains of these micro-organisms are inhibited in such serum3. Free staphylococcal coagulase may be a factor destroying the bactericidal properties of serum4–6. Other authors obtained contradictory results7.
