Increased Circulating Insulin-like Activity in Obese-Hyperglycæmic Mice

Abstract

THE hereditary obese-hyperglycæmic syndrome of mice is a condition characterized by extreme adiposity, hyperglycæmia, hypercholesterolæmia, and a variety of metabolic, endocrine, enzymatic and behavioural idiosyncrasies1–3. High blood glucose values are observed under conditions of ad libitum feeding in spite of an increased insulin content of the pancreas, extensive hypertrophy of the islets of Langerhans and marked hyperplasia and degranulation of the beta-cells4.
