Abstract
ALTHOUGH the life-history of lamellibranchs of the family Unionidae has been known for almost a century, little has been recorded concerning members of the related Mutelidae. This taxonomically illdefined family has representatives in the freshwaters of Africa, South America and Australia. A glochidial stage similar to that of the Unionidae is said to occur in the development of some reputed mutelids in Australia. At least one South American species produces a peculiar larva to which the name lasidium has been given but its subsequent development is unknown. Nothing has been recorded regarding the development of the African species.
