Sintering of Quartz Crystal

Abstract

THE transformation of quartz into cristobalite at temperatures higher than 1,470° C. has hitherto been accepted as a direct process. Recent measurements of the kinetics of this reaction (unpublished work) have, however, shown that the process is indirect and consists of two consecutive reactions in which a non-crystalline, disordered silica phase appears as an unstable intermediary between the quartz and the cristobalite.
