Abstract
THE behaviour and function of lymphocytes were discussed at a meeting in London in 19571. As a consequence of the results of experiments with radioactive labels2, the hypothesis of continuous re-utilization of large fragments of lymphocyte nucleic acids or nucleoproteins during the formation of new lymphocytes was generally accepted. Morphological support for this view has been put forward by Trowell3, who has demonstrated that the reticular cells are differentiated into large lymphocytes in the course of phagocytosis of dead lymphocytes in vitro. We have been able to supplement his findings by similar observations made during the time of heightened lymphocyte dissolution in vivo.
