Abstract
SIMONINI1 found that the reaction of silver carboxylates with one equivalent of iodine gave compounds of the general formula (R·CO2)2AgI: for example, 2Ph·CO2Ag + I2 → (Ph·CO2)2AgI + AgI. These compounds were further investigated by Wieland and Fischer2, while Crawford and Simonds3 have more recently confirmed a similar formulation for the compounds formed from silver perfluorocarboxylates. Bryce-Smith and Clarke4 have found that homolytic phenylation and electrophilic halogenation and benzoyloxylation can occur when silver iodide dibenzoate and silver bromide dibenzoate react with certain aromatic compounds.
