Abstract
RECENT ultra-violet spectroscopic studies of the effects of substitution on the biphenyl chromophore led to the preparation of a number of alkyl-substituted biphenyls, and the purity of these compounds and of others prepared elsewhere were checked by the use of the gas – liquid chromatographic apparatus available in this Institute. It was immediately apparent that the considerable changes in the ultraviolet absorption spectra which accompany substitution in the ortho positions of the biphenyl system1 were closely paralleled by correspondingly large changes in the relative retention volumes of the compounds.
