The Carotid Body of the Pilot Whale, Globicephala melaena

Abstract

HEYMANS1 has shown that mammalian blood pressure and respiration-rate are largely regulated by chemoreceptive cells which are innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve. These are situated near the bifurcation of the common carotid artery (carotid body) and at the base of the great arteries (aortic body).
