Abstract

IT has been repeatedly observed that in the course of cell-growth processes of various nature (embryonic tissues1, regenerating tissues in adult animals2, tumours of epithelial and mesenchymal origin3, etc.) the metachromatic substance is demonstrable, or increased if pre-existing, in the intercellular component of tissues. A relationship seems to exist between cell-growth processes and production of metachromatic substance in surrounding connective tissues; but its nature is unknown. We have therefore studied the genesis of intercellular metachromatic substances in the course of experimental oncogenesis, in order to establish whether their appearance is secondary to the already formed tumour or prior to its onset.
