Significance of the Ratio between the Water-soluble Aromatic and Nitrogen Constituents of Apple and Pear in the Host-Parasite Relationships of Venturia Species

Abstract

VARIOUS workers have directed attention to the possible importance of aromatic host constituents in associations between plants and pathogens1–3. Recent work at East Malling4,5 on the water-soluble constituents of apple and pear leaves and stems has made possible a detailed investigation of the biochemical aspects of host–parasite relations in Venturia inaequalis and V. pirina, the causal fungi of apple scab and pear scab respectively.
