Abstract
ON April 20 the Society for General Microbiology held a sympesium on "The Nature of the Bacterial Surface". Seven contributions and two surveys by the chairmen had been printed and circulated to members of the Society before the meeting. On the assumption, which proved to be well founded, that these had already been read by those attending the symposium, most of the time of the meeting was spent on discussion. Argument had to be restrained rather than promoted by the chairmen, and it ranged over a wide but relevant field ; although the meeting was extended beyond the time arranged, it finished with several members still wishing to speak.
