Abstract
QUEEN VICTORIA had been only twelve years on the throne when there was inaugurated in Bedford Square, London, a "Ladies' College" at which young women might acquire something more than their customary, somewhat vacuous, social background. Its founder, Mrs. Reid, had dreamed for many years of such a college for women, and it was owing to her coaseless effort and zeal that Bedford college opened its doors a full twenty years before Girton College was opened at Hitchin or the idea of Newnham College was conceived.
