Proton Bombardment of Fluorine

Abstract

CAPTURE γ-rays have been detected in the proton bombardment of most of the light nuclei from Li7 to Cl37. The yield from a thick target for a single level in the compound nucleus is proportional to : The presence of a compating mode of disintegration only reduces this yield as much as it increases the total width Γ. Thus, in the case of F19, the most probable transmutation is the short-range α-emission : but this should not decrease the probability of γ-emission from the levels of Ne20 produced by protons of more than about 600 keV., for in this energy region we expect the proton width Γp to exceed the short-range α-particle width Γa ; and the total width Γ will be determined largely by the former.
