Electron Optical Observations on Chromosome Structure in Resting Cells

Abstract

PRESENT knowledge of chromosome structure is based chiefly on observations made on fixed preparations of large mitotic chromosomes or of the so-called giant chromosomes in the salivary gland of certain diptera with microscopes utilizing visible or ultra-violet light1. A preliminary account has recently been published of electron microscope studies on large plant chromosomes2. Little or nothing is known concerning the structure of chromosomes in resting cells beyond the fact that they are present in the form of exceedingly slender threads (chromonemata) or of the so-called chromatin network3.
