Pteroylglutamic Acid in Liver Extracts and Urine

Abstract

In order to undergo pupation and emergence, the larva of Aedes œgypti L. is dependent on the presence of ‘folic acid’ in the medium1. The use of water-extracted yeast residue makes it possible to replace the ‘folic acid’ of Williams by synthetic pteroyl-glutamic acid (L. casei liver factor) but not by thymine (in quantities up to 1 gm. per 1. of medium) or by xanthopterin1,2. On the basis of these findings, we have used the metamorphosis of mosquito larvæ as a test for pteroylglutamic acid in liver extracts and urine.
